Kanser ve Kanser Hastalarına Yönelik Damgalama Tutumlarının Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

İntroduction: Stigmatization has been associated with cancer, a life-threatening condition, for a long time, and stigmatization toward cancer (stigma) complicates personal relationships and causes cancer patients to avoid. This survey was conducted as a descriptive survey to evaluate stigmatization attitudes toward cancer and cancer patients. Methods: The data were collected by face-to-face interview using Sociodemographic Information Form and Questionnaire for Measuring Attitudes Toward Cancer (MATC) (Cancer Stigma)-Community Version. The sample of the study consisted of 301 participants who admitted to a Health Application and Research Hospital for any reason and accepted this survey. Data were evaluated on the computer in IBM SPSS 22 package program and mean, percentage distributions, independent two sample t test, one-way variance analysis (ANOVA), Fisher exact test and Chi-square test were used in statistical analysis. Results: The mean age of the participants was 32.27 ± 18.75 and 54.5% of the participants were female. Although the total score averages of the MATC Questionnaire were low, the score average of the impossibility of recovery sub-dimension was higher. The discrimination sub-dimension and the scale total score averages of male participants were higher than the female participants (p=0.009). The negative attitudes of participants, who have cancer patients among their relatives, toward cancer and cancer patients were higher (p=0.019).Discussion and Conclusion: By measuring attitudes toward cancer, focusing on cancer as a treatable disease may contribute to positive developments in early diagnosis and participation in treatment. Public education and awareness programs can be developed for this purpose. In order to prevent stigmatization in cancer patients within the scope of these training programs, it is thought that emphasizing to the patients that the problems and limitations accompanying the disease should be accepted, the diseases are part of life and they can happen to anyone can mitigate psychosocial processes of cancer patients and their families that they will go through during cancer disease.
