Abstract

Since 2014 Austria faces a continuous influx of refugees, the majority of whom coming from Syria. After some time, these refugees often start or continue their higher education in Austria. Consequently, the question arises to what extent flight and migration influence the success of Syrian students at universities in Austria. Furthermore, it would be interesting to find out which strategies of inclusion can help to eliminate barriers and inequalities and which contributions universities can make in this respect. These questions are answered in this master's thesis after having conducted eight qualitative, semi-structured interviews with Syrian students. In addition, specialist literature is consulted, and other projects and approaches are considered. The research revealed that the target group faces many difficulties in their studies. Examples include the unfamiliar education system, bureaucratic barriers, language difficulties, racism, prejudice, lacking consideration of individual needs, precarious financial situations, interconnectedness with their families and happenings in the country of origin. These circumstances could be improved with the help of mentoring, tutorials, contact points to report problems and gain information, courses for academic language, reduction of bureaucratic obstacles, financial support, more space for diversity and consideration of individual needs.
