In this thesis the practices of a housing rights organization in Ankara and its struggle for a more social implementation of an urban transformation project are discussed. The actors of the “Dikmen Valley Housing Rights Office” could form a network with different actors like NGOs, local governments, the parliament and university without being instrumentalized through party politics. They see themselves as the advocates of the inhabitants in informal housing areas and through their “politics without politics” a mobilization along ethnic or religious lines is avoided. The housing rights organization can be seen as a part of the grassroots globalization (Appadurai 2000) that makes an important contribution to the deepening of democracy (Appadurai 2002).
