La primera edición conocida de gozos polifónicos a la manera de las hojas volantes (Barcelona, 1702)

Abstract

[EN] From the very beginning of the musical development of “gozos” (literally joy or glee) or couplets to the Virgin Mary around the 15th century (with the famous case included in the Llibre vermell de Montserrat), and with the technological advantages brought by the invention of Gutenberg’s printing press, there were many cases of “gozo” texts (“goigs” in Catalan ) dedicated to Mary or the saints which were set to music and even printed. Nevertheless, these “gozos” were always monophonic and very often limited to a few bars, using simple tunes that could be learnt by heart and reproduced in popular worship. Since then, these musical “gozos” spread widely and internationally (from the old Aragon kingdom and particularly from Catalonia to France, Italy and Latin America). The present case, truly exceptional in many respects, represents the oldest known printed document of polyphonic “gozos” (here dedicated to Saint Bruno, founder of the Carthusian order), keeping the traditional formal and graphic layout of flysheets (with the exception of its size). This is a particularly remarkable example because the name of the composer, Jerónimo de la Torre, is given (a rarity in general), as well as the place where it was published, the name of the printer and the date of the document, fortunately preserved today at the Biblioteca de Catalunya (Catalonia National Library) in Barcelona.

[ES] Desde la aparición del cultivo musical de gozos a la Virgen María hacia finales de la edad media (con el paradigmático caso insertado en el Llibre vermell de Montserrat), y con el posterior avance tecnológico que supuso la invención de la imprenta, fueron muchos los casos de textos de gozos dedicados a la Virgen o a los santos que se musicalizaron, e incluso que se llegaron a imprimir. No obstante, éstos fueron siempre de carácter monódico, y a menudo reducidos a unos simples compases, que recogían melodías sencillas para ser memorizadas y reproducidas por la devoción popular. El presente caso, verdaderamente excepcional desde múltiples puntos de vista, recoge el primer testimonio impreso de unos gozos polifónicos (aquí dedicados a san Bruno, fundador de la orden de la Cartuja) «a la manera de» las hojas volantes, ya que comparte con éstas su disposición formal y gráfica, aunque no las dimensiones. De manera sobresaliente —por lo infrecuente del caso—, se conoce el nombre de su compositor, Jerónimo de la Torre, así como el lugar de edición, el nombre del impresor y la datación del documento, que por fortuna se conserva, hoy día, en la barcelonesa Biblioteca de Catalunya.

[CA] Des de l’aparició del cultiu musical de goigs a la Verge Maria cap a finals de l’edat mitjana (amb el paradigmàtic cas inserit en el Llibre vermell de Montserrat), i amb el posterior avenç tecnològic que va suposar la invenció de la impremta, foren molts els casos de textos de goigs dedicats a la Verge o als sants que es musicaren i, fins i tot, que s’arribaren a imprimir. No obstant això, aquests foren sempre de caràcter monòdic, i sovint reduïts a uns simples compassos, que recollien melodies senzilles per a ser memoritzades i reproduïdes per la devoció popular. El cas que presentem, veritablement excepcional des de múltiples punts de vista, recull el primer testimoni imprès d’uns goigs polifònics (aquí dedicats a sant Bru, fundador de l’orde de la Cartoixa) «a la manera» dels fulls volanders, ja que comparteix amb aquests la seva disposició formal i gràfica, encara que no les dimensions. De manera destacada —per la infreqüència del cas—, es coneix el nom del seu compositor, Jerónimo de la Torre, així com el lloc d’edició, el nom de l’impressor i la datació del document que, per sort, es conserva, avui, a la barcelonina Biblioteca de Catalunya.

El presente trabajo se enmarca dentro del proyecto del Grup de Recerca Emergent recono-cido por la Generalitat de Catalunya (Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca, AGAUR), titulado Música i patrimoni a la Corona d’Aragó (s. xvi-xix) [SGR 2009-2013; nº expediente: 2009 SGR 863; nº referencia AGAUR: AE056228], así como del proyecto de investigación financiado (Plan Nacional de I + D + I) titulado Orígenes y articulación de la musicología hispánica en Europa. Felipe Pedrell (1841-1922) e Higinio Anglés (1888-1969) [referencia HAR2008-06058/ARTE]. Por otro lado, una parte de la presente investigación se generó gracias a unos estudios más amplios, que obtuvi-eron financiación por parte del Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya, a través de su Centre de Promoció de la Cultura Popular i Tradicional Catalana, con el fin de realizar un proyecto en investigación etnomusicológica (años 2007 y 2008, respectivamente).
