Abstract

I dette innledende kapitlet presenterer vi bokas bidrag og identifiserer fire fengselssosiologiske temaer som bokas kapitler spesielt behandler. For det første aktualiserer flere av kapitlene den betydningen ulike former for sosial ulikhet har i fengslet, og viser hvordan noen fangegrupper har andre – og hardere – soningserfaringer enn andre. Videre belyser kapitlene hvordan fengslet er uløselig knyttet til den moderne velferdsstaten og nye straffeformer. Et tredje tema er straffeanstaltenes hverdagsliv, der forfatterne analyserer hvordan fangene opplever stigma, krenkelsesprosesser og institusjonalisering. Et siste tema er fengslet som arena for maktens mange forskjellige former. Kapitlet gir også en overordnet oversikt over bidragene, inkludert deres teoretiske og metodiske vinklinger, og presenterer bokas utgangspunkt som et kollektivt læringsprosjekt.
