Abstract Drawing on folklorist Américo Paredes’s insights on the ethnographic encounter, this article examines the role of personal experience in the fieldwork process. In particular, I provide a personal account of how my identity shaped my interactions in the field and how these ethnographic encounters in turn shaped my approach to, and understanding of, a specific festival.
