It is interesting for several reasons. In the first place, members of Subgen. Vignea are rare in Malaysia : the species described below and C. monopleura Krecz. are the only ones recorded from Sumatra. This is what one would expect if, as the writer has suggested, the genus had its origin in Malaysia, because the Vigneae are considered to represent a type of plant which came late in the evolution of the Carices. The Vigneae have their greatest present-day concentration on the other side of the world from Malaysia-in North America. Secondly, this new Carex belongs to a section of Vignea new to Sumatra, Sect. Stellulatae (C. monopleura belongs to Sect. Elongatae). We in Britain can think of Sect. Stellulatae as being typified by our common bog sedge, C. echinata Murr. (C. stellulata Gooden.), and Sect. Elongatae by the equally common, but stream-side plant, C. remota L.
