Adult Beet Armyworm and Fall Armyworm: Histology of the Compound Eyes

Abstract

The compound eyes of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hubner), and the fall armyworm, S. frugiperda (J. E. Smith), are composed, respectively, of 6-7 thousand ommatidia 240-290 @mm long and 10-12 thousand ommatidia 400-470 @mm long. Both species have lenses ca. 18 @mm wide and 8 @mm thick. The cellular organization of eyes of both species is similar to that of the bollworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie).
