We have found no reported proof of major, permanent detrimental effects from the smoking of marijuana in small amounts by rational people. Yet it has been linked with everything from irreversible brain damage to marked relief of pain. Why is the literature so contradictory? In 1967, a high priority program was inaugurated by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare to study the implications of marijuana use.
