from the Pacific Ocean, E. bifilis Gibbs, E. bulbornatus Gibbs, and E. longibarba Parr. Since this revision an additional eight species have been reported, but not described, from the Pacific: E. enbarbatus Welsh, E. patulus Regan and Trewavas, and E. schmidti Regan and Trewavas (King and Iversen, 1962:319); E. bigelowi Welsh, E. macrurus Regan and Trewavas, E. simplex Regan and Trewavas, and E. tenisoni Regan and Trewavas (Grandperrin and Rivaton, 1966:47); E. trewavasae Norman (Gibbs, 1968:5). Among the large number of midwater fishes collected by recent expeditions of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to the central and western Pacific were eight specimens of an undescribed species of Eustomias and one speciman of E. patulus Regan and Trewavas. Eustomias gibbsi is perhaps noteworthy in that it is the first species to be first described from more than four specimens (a majority were described from one or two) and with eight known specimens is well within the top one-half of the best known species of Eustomias.
