L’Œuvre au Noir un roman historique et autobiographique

Abstract

Marguerite Yourcenar recherche dans un passe lointain sa source d’inspiration pour peindre les difficultes de l’homme. L’Œuvre au Noir est l’une des œuvres majeures de cette romanciere classique contemporaine. Dans ce roman, elle nous decrit le climat intellectuel et historique de l’Europe du XVIe siecle dechiree par l’heresie, la violence et l’obscurantisme et peint la biographie imaginaire de Zenon, medecin et philosophe alchimiste. Ce roman est tres charge par des references historiques reelles. Bien que Marguerite Yourcenar refute la caracterisation historique de ses œuvres L’Œuvre au Noir semble se preter a cette designation. Cet articlea pour but de rappeler les caracteristiques du roman historique afin de signaler les raisons qui pourront classer cette œuvre dans la rangee des romans historiques. Nous examinerons egalement la signification de la couleur noire et les convergences qui pourraient exister entre les elements de la biographie imaginaire du protagoniste et ceux de la biographie de l’auteur, ce qui prouverait la trace de la pensee et l’ideologie de Yourcenar dans ce roman.
