The Element-kath / -kanthin the place-names of Transoxiana

Abstract

L'article est consacre aux variantes du marqueur de noms de lieu -kaθ/-kand dans la Transoxiane antique et medievale. L'etude cas par cas des toponymes, suivie de l'analyse etymologique des mots Ir.anc. *kata- 'maison' et *kanθa- 'ville', ainsi que de leurs descendants, montre que le premier de ces mots n'est pas lie au marqueur en question, alors que c'est le cas pour le second. Dans les toponymes retrouves dans les sources islamiques, cet element formatif est habituellement exprime par -kaθ, -kand. Il est caracteristique: a) des noms de la vallee de Ferγana; b) des noms turcs; c) des noms des grandes villes (comme Paikand et Samarq/kand) qui ont filtre a travers le (moyen)-perse. Le changement medieval tardif de -kaθ a -kand est l'effet de la turkisation et la persianisation de la Transoxiane.
