Se estudiaron en el Instituto Materno Infantil, de Bogotá, 125 casos consecutivos de muerte fetal intraparto.Se encontró́ que las causas más frecuentes fueron las debidas a compromisos del cordón umbilical (28%), las enfermedades maternas (20.8%) incluyendo la toxemia gravídica (16.8%), las hiperdinamias uterinas por abuso de oxitócicos (8o/o), la infección amniótica (5.6%), el abruptio placentae (4.8%), la ruptura uterina (4%), las complicaciones del parto en pelvis (4%), el trabajo de parto prolongado (5.6%). En un 12% de los casos no fue posible establecer el factor causante de la muerte.En 106 oportunidades (84%) se consideró que las muertes fetales eran inevitables.
