Inmigración en Panamá: ¿Complemento o sustituto?

Abstract

El actual documento de trabajo presenta un análisis sobre la relación entre el flujo de extranjeros que emigra hacia Panamá y algunas dimensiones del bienestar social en el país, incluyendo la educación, la desigualdad del ingreso, la dinámica del mercado laboral y la pobreza. Usando una serie de modelos probit con datos del último censo poblacional, estimamos que el ser migrante en Panamá está asociado con una mayor probabilidad de haber completado la educación universitaria o niveles superiores, una mayor probabilidad de tener empleo, y a una menor probabilidad de vivir en un hogar pobre. Adicionalmente, se encontró que el ser migrante está asociado con un mayor salario. Nuestros resultados son consistentes con la hipótesis de que la inmigración en Panamá puede estar complementando la oferta de recursos humanos de alta calificación. Finalmente, como complemento, el documento ofrece un mapeo de la localización de las mayores concentraciones de migrantes en edad laboral a nivel corregimiento.
