Diagnóstico de seguridad vial 2013: Ecuador

Abstract

Durante los últimos anos Ecuador ha experimentado un crecimiento continuado en el número de habitantes, así como en el índice de motorización, cuyo valor aún se encuentra muy alejado de los países de altos ingresos. La Mayoría (73,6%) de los accidentes se registran en el entorno urbano, sin embargo, el mayor número de fallecidos (58%) se encuentra en vías interurbanas. El Plan Nacional de Seguridad Vial 2013-2020 tiene como meta la reducción de un 50% el número de fallecidos en ese periodo de tiempo, lo que conllevaría salvar la vida de 12.000 personas. Con una tasa de 18,8 fallecidos por cien mil habitantes, en el año 2012, Ecuador se sitúa por encima de la media de la región de América Latina y el Caribe (17.2).
