Microgrid Protection Systems

Abstract

Distribution-connected and behind-the-meter distributed energy resources (DERs), including generation and energy storage systems, are being increasingly integrated into electrical power systems. Microgrids help leverage these DERs to keep the power on when the normal supply is unavailable (e.g., due to faults or equipment outages). These systems, however, present unique protection challenges to detect and respond to faults. This report describes some challenges and 6 potential solutions for microgrid protection.

The working group for microgrid protection systems was given the assignment to develop a report to the System Protection Subcommittee of the IEEE Power System Relaying and Control Committee. The report will investigate and assess techniques, approaches, and potential solutions to the challenges of microgrid protection.
