Abstract

Der Beitrag analysiert erstmals systematisch das Demokratieverständnis von Richard Sennett. Er verortet es zudem im Kontext politischer und soziologischer Demokratieverständnisse und zeigt so, dass Sennetts Verbindung von republikanischen und soziologischen Elementen über sein Werk hinaus fruchtbar sein könnte. Die zentrale These lautet, dass Sennetts Demokratieverständnis von zwei grundlegenden Positionen getragen wird: In analytischer Hinsicht versteht er Demokratie als Lebensform, sodass die politische Dimension der sozialen Praxis in allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft analysiert werden muss. Für die kritische Evaluation dieser Analysen legt Sennett dann normative Kriterien an, die aus der Tradition des konfliktiven Republikanismus stammen, zu der auch Alexis de Tocqueville und Hannah Arendt gehören.
