Abstract

Trabzon İmparatorluğu, Bizans İmparatoru Andronikos Komnenos’uniki torunu tarafından 1204 yılında kuruldu. Bu son Bizans Devleti, OsmanlıSultanı II. Mehmed1 tarafından 1461 yılında fethedilene kadar, onlarınsoyundan Büyük Komnenoi, Trabzon İmparatorları, Pontus olarak bilinenKaradeniz’in güneydoğu kıyıları boyunca sahil şeridini yönettiler.İmparatorluktaki egemen halk, uzun süre boyunca bölgesel bağımsızlıksergilemiş olan Pontus Grekleriydi, ancak imparatorlukta ikamet edençoğunluk muhtemelen Gürcü menşeili savaşçı boylar olan Laz ve Tzanlardı.İmparatorluğun refahı kısmen, hatırı sayılır ölçüdeki ihracata (gümüş,demir, şap, kereste, şarap, giysi malzemesi ve fındık), kısmen de Bağdat’ın1258 yılında Moğollar tarafından fethedilmesini takip eden yıllarda açılan veXV. yüzyılın sonlarında Portekizliler Hint Okyanusuna girdiğinde veTrabzon bağımsızlığını yitirdiğinde gerileyen Doğu ticaretine dayanıyordu.
