Civisme épiscopal, civisme démocrate-chrétien en France: une divergence (1919-1939)

Abstract

D’un meme cœur, l’episcopat et les democrates-chretiens denoncaient une autorite et une loi fondees sur des doctrines materialistes. Toutefois une divergence s’etablit entre eux a propos des moyens concrets capables d’incarner l’ideal chretien dans la societe. Adeptes de la methode d’immanence, les democrates-chretiens tenterent de christianiser la theorie de l’institution de Maurice Hauriou. En replique, la hierarchie se risqua a former l’esprit civique des catholiques par le truchement d’un catechisme politique traditionaliste. En outre l’Assemblee des cardinaux et archeveques mit a l’etude ces questions politiques. Elle accorda un discret satisfecit au mouvement des Croix de Feu tandis qu’elle maintenait ses distances par rapport au Parti democrate populaire et a ses choix politiques et juridiques.
