Kincentric : Designing Environment in a More-than-Human World

Abstract

Iona Island Regional Park is slated for one of Canada’s largest ecological restoration projects situated on the unceded land of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people in an urban estuary. This graduate proposal takes its cues from this future project proposal and the recent public engagement summaries. I use a kincentric approach to understand the perspective of non-human species to explore how landscape architecture can take on a more holistic design approach that considers all species equal. Using phased sequential section drawing, I explore how decommissioned wastewater treatment ponds in this estuary can be transformed into floodplain habitat on the foreshore of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Territory at xʷəyeyət (Iona Island).
