Alla vigilia dello scoppio della Seconda guerra mondiale la maggioranza dei Paesi europei aveva perduto un assetto democratico e i governi erano decisamente orientati in forme autoritarie che assumevano varie forme, a cominciare da quelle fasciste. L'articolo prende in esame la complessa articolazione di tali forme e le teorie politiche che erano sottese.
