
The central nucleus of the inferior colliculus is the target for axons from numerous brain stem auditory nuclei and, in turn, the origin of parallel streams of information ascending to the auditory cortex through the auditory thalamus. The central nucleus thus acts as a sorting house for virtually all auditory information processed in the hindbrain, or a nexus—a connecting link—between hind- and forebrain.
