This paper investigates encoder measurement error and introduces a method of reducing or cancelling the encoder error from gear transmission error signals. The time domain and frequency domain analysis of the combined encoder error signals has been carried out to show the validity of the method. This method could be useful where the error of lower cost encoders is larger and undocumented and where there is limited space and only a smaller and less accurate encoder will fit.
