Since the first occurrence of a previously unknown disease, characterized by vacuolating brain lesions associated to nodavirus infection, similar diseases have been reported from more than 40 marine species belonging to different families. According to OIE (Office International des Epizooties) all these epizootics should be regarded as a single disease to be identified with the official name Viral Encephalopathy and Retinopathy (VER).
