The paper will first discuss the various approaches to a computer on a chip as advanced by the various semiconductor vendors and in the various R&D programs sponsored by the government. This discussion will include a description of the work being performed for the Navy who are developing the technology for a 5000--10,000 gate chip. Among the questions to be discussed are: given the fact that 10,000 gates can be packaged, what function should it contain? Should it be independent and programmable or should it be a part of a system?Following the chip discussion the subject of the ways and the whys of interconnecting these chips will be discussed.
