Middle Miocene anurans from the Carpathian Basin

Abstract

The middle Miocene localities of Hasznos, Szentendre, Sámsonháza 3, Mátraszólós 1 and 2, Felsótárkány 1 and 3/2, Hungary yielded at least seven different anuran taxa: Latonia gigantea, Discoglossus sp., Palaeobatrachus hiri n. sp., Pelobates sanchizi n. sp., Bufo cf. viridis, Hyla cf. arborea, and Rana esculenta synklepton. The osteological features of Palaeobatrachus hiri n. sp., and Pelobates sanchizi n. sp., resembling closely some anuran taxa previously known from the Oligocène of Central Europe only, suggest a perpetuation of these lineages up to middle Miocene times. An account of osteological characters of a series of only occasionally traced small and fragile anuran cranial bones, found in the localities of Mátraszólós is also given. The anuran assemblages apparently displayed a low local diversity, usually with 1- 4 taxa in each locality, except those of Mátraszólós wherefrom 6 different taxa were recorded. In the Carpathian Basin, the middle Miocene (MN 6-8) may be treated as a transitional period with common occurrence of the palaeobatrachid and/or large discoglossids {Latonia} anurans, contrasting with late Neogene times when these groups became relatively rare. Taphonomic and paleoecological implications of the studied assemblages are given.
