By comparing several known exact solutions of acoustic scattering problems, it is observed that the scattered fields show some joint features. The directivities which are functions of the direction of incidence and of the observation direction can be expressed in terms of one or two functions of one variable. By a type of acoustic momentum equation this is shown to be related to the occurrence of edges in the scattering region. The number of functions of one variable, which we call the rank of the scattering problem, is related to the number and type of edges.

| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 1 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Average | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Average | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Average |
