Mindfulness‐based stress reduction for family carers of people with dementia

Abstract

Background: Dementia is a medical condition that commonly affects older people leading to gradual memory decline, cognitive and functional impairment, and behavioral changes. Caring for people with dementia is stressful and may result in physical and psychological consequences such as heart diseases, anxiety, and depression among carers. It is important for health care professionals such as nurses to provide support for carers who experienced psychological distress during the care of people with dementia at home. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn has shown to assist carers cope with their stress when they feel overwhelmed by the responsibility of care. The MBSR programme conducted over 6 to 8 weeks, usually involves a range of activities such as mindfulness practice, body scan, yoga, and meditation. The process of carers paying attention to the present moment during mindfulness is known to reduce the feelings of worry and rumination that are often associated with the destructive thoughts. This process enables carers to learn to accept their thoughts and emotions and assist them to cope with their distress during dementia care. This is a commentary on a Cochrane review published in 2018 (Liu, Sun, & Zhong, 2018).
