Cognition means ‘kowning’ and is the process by which we know about the world‥ In human beings this is extremely complicated and although much is understood there is much more to be learnt. However, humans and perhaps more pertinently for radar systems, echo locating mammals are able to sense and interact with their environment in sophisticated ways that are beyond synthetic systems. In this paper we examine the nature, role and value of cognition in radar systems
