A new type of linear motor based on non resonant vibration with piezoelectric stacks was investigated. The operation principle of the motor was studied basing on the output characteristic of the piezoelectric stack. The elliptical trajectory could be excited at driving top which was proved theoretically. The structure of the motor was designed and a prototype machine was fabricated. The testing of the prototype machine was carried on. It indicates that the motor can operate steadily in a wide range of frequency. Furthermore, the free velocity is approximately linear to the exciting voltage and the exciting frequency. When the frequency is 1.6kHz and the voltage is 100V, the free speed is 2.8×10−3m/s and the largest thrust is 3.5N.
