Patients with gastrointestinal disorders are at high risk for malnutrition. Malnutrition results in an increased length of stay by contributing to the development of complications of disease or surgery. Nurses can help prevent complications by reporting signs and symptoms in hospitalized gastrointestinal patients suffering from malnutrition. Recognition of the methods of nutritional assessment and awareness of the shortcomings of each are needed for accurate assessment of the clinical status.
