Licking Pests: Pest Management and Postage

Licking Pests: Pest Management and Postage

Abstract

In addition to their usual function as proof of prepayment for mail delivery, stamps mirror popular attitudes and beliefs. Stamps also serve as sources of information on directions of social change and provide a way to trace changes over time. Although entomologists, plant pathologists, nematologists, and other pest management professionals try to stamp out pests, few realize the connection between pest management and postage stamps. As unlikely as the idea may seem, postage stamps provide a unique chronicle of pest management practices. For this reason, entomologists and other pest management personnel should look at postage stamps in a new light.
