
Abstract This chapter on coconut (Cocos nucifera) and salak (Salacca zalacca) covers the following: taxonomy, area of origin, geographical distribution, environmental conditions (soil chemical and physical properties) for growth, plant morphology (stems, roots, leaves, inflorescences and flowers) and development (pollination and fruit set), cultivar development, cultural practices (propagation, transplanting and spacing, irrigation, pruning and fertilizer application), pests and diseases, weed control (mainly through cultural control), harvesting, postharvest handling and marketing.
