Abstract Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) includes a set of tools that hospitals can use to improve care for their older patients and their families. The hospitals that have implemented NICHE depend on a small cadre of nurses prepared in geriatrics. The number of nurses responsible for implementing NICHE in each hospital represents a small percentage of the total hospital nursing staff. The geriatric resource nurse (GRN) and acute care of the elderly (ACE) unit models of practice implemented in most NICHE hospitals typically depend on only one advanced practice geriatric nurse.
