Formal cooperative learning activities (as opposed to more informal group learning activities) help improve students’ academic performance as well as increase motivation, strengthen self-esteem, and promote literacy skills. When used properly, cooperative learning develops students’ social and communication skills, increases behaviors inclusive of diversity, and improves academic achievement. It is a powerful means for involving students in real-world problem solving.
