The idea of combining large vortical structures in the flow with the dynamical behavior of open systems to enhance heat transfer and mixing has led to the design and construction of an experimental apparatus to study order breaking in such systems. The apparatus consists of a succession of curved channels in which the curvature plane rotates 90° between each two adjacent curved elements. In this paper, the basic idea and the design concepts are described in detail. Some preliminary results are also presented.
