Performance of General Lighting Service Lamps

Abstract

The power crisis problem is getting worst in the developing countries. Steps are being taken to overcome the problem by managing the available power. Replacement of energy inefficient lamps with energy efficient lamps is also among these steps. This paper presents a comparative analysis between General Lighting Service (GLS) lamps, use for producing artificial lights at homes and offices. GLS lamps include Incandescent lamp (IL), Fluorescent Lamp (FL) & Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL). The comparison is made on the basis of efficacy, power consumption and power quality. Experiments have been conducted on GLS lamps in Electrical Power System Laboratory (NED University) and Philips lighting design software CALCULUX. Result show that the FL is beneficial for utility as well as for consumer in terms of efficacy, power quality and power consumption. However replacement of IL with CFL on mass scale will not be worthwhile for both, consumers as well as for utility companies.
