CELLS of Acetobacter xylinum are known to produce cellulose. This synthesis has been demonstrated in resting fresh and lyophilized cells1,2. Enzymic synthesis of cellulose by preparations from A. xylinum has been shown with the aid of tracer techniques3,4 and electronmicrography5.
