This is a review of the publications in chemical microscopy from January 1984 through December 1985, primarily as documented in Chemical Abstracts. The review stresses advances in microscopical techniques, primarily using the polarized light microscope, and in instrumentation related to present or potential analytical methods. As in previous reviews, certain topics are excluded: for example, virtually all publications concerning transmission electron microscopy or scanning electron microscopy are omitted, as are publications of a more theoretical nature.

| citations This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 61 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Top 10% | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Top 10% | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Average |
