Abstract The luminescence of the lanarkites Pb 2 OSO 4 , Pb 2 OMoO 4 , Pb 2 OS 0.97 Mo 0.03 O 4 and of PbO is reported. These systems have a common structural feature that they contain one-dimensional chains. It has been observed that in these compounds only at low temperatures Pb 2+ emission may be found. Excitation results mainly in the formation of mobile electron-hole pairs, which can recombine radiatively at disconnecting sites in the chains.
