This paper is concerned with the determination of the mechanical properties of connective tissues by subjecting them to uniaxial tensile loading. The emphasis is upon techniques which can be applied to a wide variety of tissues, and particular attention is paid to such problems as specimen form, cross-sectional-area measurement, gripping the specimen, providing a suitable test environment and measuring specimen extension.
