Avian species richness of Amazonia is legendary. Not only is the total number of species greater than in any other rainforest area (Karr 1989), but the local diversity is also greater (Haffer 1990) despite the restricted ranges of many species. One component of this wealth of species are birds of riparian habitats. They make up some 15% of the terrestrial avifauna endemic to Amazonia (Remsen and Parker 1983).
