The surface properties of phyllosilicates are related to their crystallochemical nature. A particle is generally constituted of several stacking of layers, which are more or less well oriented with respect to each other. To simplify, we can consider the particle as being constituted of only one stacking of layers. In general, the particle will be very thin but very extended in the two other dimensions.
