While recent progress in heart transplantation has been remarkable, the shortage of donor hearts has become a serious problem in many countries. One solution to this problem is the totally implantable artificial cardiac prosthesis. For such a prosthesis various kinds of implantable artificial hearts have been proposed [1–3]. One of these uses a modified Stirling cycle machine as an actuator [4] and another an electrohydraulic energy converter [5]. Most studies of prostheses, however, treat a variety of artificial hearts utilizing small electric motors.
