Modernity and modernism both share the common stem word “modern”. Modern refers to all things new and in present as opposed to old and antiquated things and practices as well as anything which is in vogue and in fashion- music, modern history, modern apparels, lifestyle, technology and modern way of thinking. Modernity and modernism are two very distinct phenomena that are interdependent on each other, like two sides of a coin; one cannot exist without the other. To understand the link, we must first know what both the terms mean. This chapter explains the concepts of modernity, modernism and post modernity. Post-Modernity means that the institutions and ways of living, which were characteristic of Modernity, have been replaced to such a profound extent that our society is fundamentally different to the ‘modern’ society. It is a term that refers to new ways of thinking. For example – a collectivist culture in countries such as India, China, Japan as opposed to an individualistic culture in the US, Canada & Europe. Instead of thinking with & for the family/nation you start thinking only for yourself. There are four key features of the post-modern society which have also been discussed in this chapter.
