Coil ignition is almost invariably used to-day on modern sports cars. Magnetos are occasionally fitted as special equipment when tuning an engine to give exceptionally high rotational speeds, but in general the high voltage coil and the modern distributor is adequate for the engine speeds achieved by to-day’s sports car engines. The design of modern magnetos will be discussed at the end of the chapter.
