This is a group of drugs with analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties whose main role is to provide symptomatic relief of pain and stiffness in various rheumatic and other conditions. In 1980 these drugs accounted for 5% of all patient prescriptions and around 10% of the total ingredient cost of all drugs (McLean, 1983). With such a potential market it is not surprising that the pharmaceutical industry has responded by producing a vast range of different NSAIDs, although these all tend to have comparable efficacies and indications. Release of new NSAIDs is continuing and this chapter will confine discussion to those marketed in the United Kingdom recently.
