The nervous system is the primary means by which the human organism communicates with the environment. Trauma to the nervous system in children often results in complex morphological, biochemical, and physiological disturbances. Not surprisingly, such disruption compromises adaptational potential. This is evidenced at the psychological level of analysis as cognitive deficits, emotional dysregulation, motivational difficulties, and interpersonal maladjustment in school, at home, and in the social macroenvironment.
