Acute leukemias are malignant disorders of blood cells and their precursors characterized by accumulation of primitive cells that are not completely mature in the bone marrow and peripheral blood. These diseases are divided into two groups: acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), derived from myeloid precursors (granulocytes, monocytes, erythroid cells, and megakaryocytes), and a group arising from lymphocytes, acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). 1–5 The occurrence of either type of acute leukemia in patients of childbearing age produces profound personal and emotional impact, especially when found during pregnancy.
