Abstract

Hourly sampling of gastric contents overnight through a nasogastric tube in patients with upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage may show one of three patterns high night acidity, suggesting duodenal ulcer nocturnal neutralisation, suggesting chronic gastric ulcer achlorhydria, suggesting acute erosion or ulceration. Such secretion patterns allowed the final diagnosis to be correctly predicted in over half the patients in the series studied by Chandler et al.231
